Attempts to establish social norms are always exposed as futile by the complexity of the self. What is male? What is female? Which is the strong sex? Which is the weak one? In our search for ourselves, don't we repeatedly encounter traits that appear to be completely opposite, yet coexist quite naturally - and sometimes even cross-fertilise each other? Innocence and depravity. Dominance and submissiveness. Sensitivity and hardness. Vulnerability and strength. Black and white can not only condition each other, but merge into a dazzling, multi-faceted grey area. Even the sexes themselves are no longer thought of in dualistic terms. We have long since accepted that the human condition entails walking between worlds. Dissonance creates tension. And only through dissonance does real individuality emerge. My artistic work attempts to externalise the permanent conflict between controversial personality traits and to depict complex individuals in their discord, but also idiosyncratic beauty and aesthetics.
